O'Grady grew up in the city of Wheaton, Illinois and attended Wheaton North High School in 1981. She is the daughter Jan O'Grady (a financial planner) and Jim O'Grady. Her family was from Wheaton, Illinois, and completed her studies at Wheaton North High school in 1981. She appeared in a few commercials prior to moving in Los Angeles in 1986. Her career O'Grady started her career as model for Montgomery Ward, and well making several commercials. She made her debut on the screen with the romantic drama Having a Baby in 1988. She later played a regular role in the ABC drama China Beach alongside Dana Delany. Also, she guest starred on several TV shows. The actress appeared in independently produced and made-for-TV films. Her first major role was that of Donna Abandando on the ABC police show NYPD Blue. O'Grady played the big-haired squad secretary between 1993 and 1996, and for each year she was awarded an Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting actress in the Drama Series. Along with her ensemble, she received an award, the Screen Actors Guild Award, for the Best Performance by an Ensemble in Drama Series.
