O'Neil was in high school when she auditioned in 2005 to be a part of the third Canadian Idol season. The quality of her singing impressed panel of judges and she was promoted to an audition in the 100th place. O'Neil was praised highly by the judges but suffered major losses during the top 10 weeks as well as the Top 9 of the Finals as she fell to the bottom 3 and bottom 2 in both cases. They were stunned by the outcome and urged fans to vote for those with great singing talent such as Melissa. O'Neil has been always delivering top performance since then, always finished in the top three. O'Neil's two further performances of September 7,2005, where O'Neil was able to advance to the final two in the finals of the competition, Werner predicted that the morning papers would cover O'Neil's win over Rex Goudie as she became the third Canadian Idol and first female winner. O'Neil was promptly congratulated by Canadian Premier Paul Martin for winning Canadian Idol.
